Apparently
HealthyAlan Gaby, MD, a
specialist in nutrition and preventative medicine from
Baltimore, coined the phrase “Chronic Sub-clinical
Everything Syndrome” to describe a myriad of diseases
that have cropped up over the last 30 years; diseases that defy
concise diagnosis. People are apparently healthy, yet they just
don’t feel well. He believes we are now the third generation of
undernourished North Americans and that undernourishment is the
cause of our deteriorating health.
The human body
works like a remarkable survival machine. Outwardly, it appears
to function normally; it is apparently healthy. Inwardly,
however the wear and tear is much like that of a car engine
that hasn’t been properly maintained, it gets harder to start,
may stall, foul odours spew from the exhaust, and eventually it
won’t go anymore! Most of us think nothing of spending money
maintaining our car to ensure that it will last as long as we
own it. The auto industry has done a good job educating us
about the need for proper maintenance. Unfortunately the
industries we listen to the most when it comes to what we eat
are the manufacturers of processed and refined food. Their
focus is on selling consumable food products, not necessarily
maintaining the “machinery” that uses them. We sometimes turn
to the medical community to solve the problem. Unfortunately,
allopathic medicine has had a primary focus of
diagnosing and treating disease. Only in the last 5 to 10 years
has the role of nutrition in preventing disease been understood
and accepted in mainstream medicine.
You are what you eat. A car engine is designed to operate on
a specific fuel. Use the wrong fuel and performance suffers.
The human machine will run on a wide variety of fuels. It is so
remarkably designed that, although performance suffers, it can
mask the other problems associated with poor fuel for some
time. Unlike a car, the human body is designed to constantly
heal itself, to achieve its normal state,
good health. Sometimes this happens in the face of overwhelming
odds, but it needs the right fuel to make it happen!
The first step towards trying to “even”
the odds is to recognize and accept the fact that there is a
problem. Drugs aren’t the answer. They may be part of a
solution, but drugs won’t cure disease. Your body has the
mechanisms to fight cancer, heart disease, and chronic illness
of all kinds and even deterioration during the aging process.
These mechanisms rely on macro nutrients (fat, protein and
carbohydrate) and perhaps more importantly, micro-nutrients.
Micro-nutrients have been socially abbreviated to be simply
“vitamins and minerals”. Recently “anti-oxidants” have been
added to the must-have list. Nutritionists will tell you that
you can get everything you need from the food you eat. That may
be a technically correct statement but the rate at which
people are degenerating to diseased states would indicate that
it is not a practical statement.
Take control of your health. Talk to a professional who
understands nutrition and holistic wellness. Don’t seem to be
apparently healthy, BE TRULY HEALTHY!
